At the age of nine, Wayne had his first encounter with a chainsaw, a tiny little Homelite with a little plastic case to carry it around in. Later, during his high school years, he met Fred Lewis who was harvesting timber on the Helderberg. Wayne would go up to the forests on his scrambler after school, and Fred would show this youngster the craft of directional felling, and make him repeat the five safety features of a saw....something Fred still does to this day, but to chainsaw operator students on courses he teaches. Today as a leader in the industry, Fred can be credited with laying the foundation that Wayne relies on for his business! Wayne worked part time with Fred in his business, Freds Tree Service, while studying. He later joined Fred full time for 2 years before pursuing a carreer in agriculture and forestry. However the satisfaction of working with trees and Waynes love of trees bought him back to what is today treetech.  |
